I can't speak for the Spanish situation, but here in Italy there are some significant differences to the UK with regard to tiling and tilers.

Tiling is not generally regarded as a luxury item here, as it tends to be regarded in the UK, because tiles (ceramic, stone, etc) are the standard finish for floors everywhere, as well as for kitchen and bathroom walls. This means that there are a helluva lot of cheap, crappy tiling jobs around. This type of work tends to be done by general builders, using the cheapest labour they can get their hands on - not difficult to find here as we are very close to the Balkan and the north African countries.

That is not to say that there is not a quality side to the story, of course, as the better tilers here are far, far better than you might expect. The market for highly decorative tile and/or stone work is good - and highly paid too! However, it is very difficult to break into it in the face of local craftsmen. The feeling toward Brit craftsmen is not as high as you might like to think, as a great many cowboys have come here over the years claiming to be world experts in just about everything. This tends to result in the local specialists looking for a lot more than just a guy that can stick down tiles in a straight line.

However, if you are interested in tiling as an art, rather than just a living, it is an excellent place to learn how to do it - so long as you have a lot of respect for the Italians you will be living with and learning from.

Just a thought, mind. Maybe Spain is different?

WARNING Anyone thinking of moving to Spain and picking up regular tiling jobs whether Spanish speakers or not seriously re consider leaving it for another 12 months at least. Many Brits are returning home esp your potential clients i.e. older people not up to DIYing etc. Exchange rate is hammering Brits. Spanish firms are curently going out of business at an alarning rate too due to masses of unsold properties - I mean whole new resorts unoccupied. Until this stock starts shifting there is not a lot of new development to get work on. If you are multi traded you stand more of a chance but the problems are across the board really. I am back in UK working as are many of the tilers I know back in their respective countries. Sorry to sound all doom and gloom but anyone hoping to support a family will be lucky to make it stick in the first year without an alternative income.

    Darren.

Darren is spot on their is nothing in Spain at the moment, ime multi trade speak enough Spanish and have a good reputation but there is no money coming into the Brit community, the exchange rate has seen to that, i like many others are back in the U.K. working plenty of work here compared to Spain.

I moved back from Spain last year after 5 years living ( a stones throw from yourself stargazerlx90 ) and working there, not through lack of work but because of personal reasons. There is some very useful info on this thread if your thinking of moving there. I was lucky as I bought a ruin in a small village and did a full reform on it from which word of mouth spread and I picked up a good living thereafter. A good thing to note is that even though we are tilers it is useful to be able to do a variety of other work if you can, by that I don't mean bodge jobs as it's true , there are a LOT of people doing that, not just Brits either. If your good at what you do word of mouth will be your friend ! Another very important thing to consider is that as previously mentioned, the housing market has completely collapsed, mostly due to the uselessness of the Spanish government is resolving the mess they created by turning a blind eye and taking back handers within the housing market. In the 5 years I was there I saw so many people, both Spanish and English loose work and struggle to get more. One other thing and in my view one of the most important points, don't go there without knowing at least basic Spanish, it makes life sooo much easier !! If anyone has and specific questions regarding living and working in Spain PM me and if I can help I will.
