Question Open Question: How do you cut a hole in a ceramic wall-tile?

This is so the tile fits 'seamlessly' round a fitting, such as a plug socket.

Default How do you cut a hole in a ceramic wall-tile

Hi,
When I did a course earlier in the year we were shown how do do this by using a grinder with a dry cut blade on the front face of the tile then the over run of the blade is on the rear.
Mark the area to be cut on the front of the tile.
Start in the middle of each line and then work towards each corner .
You have not mentioned what size tiles but make sure it can't fly off.
You could use a piece of old ply with a batton screwed on and rest the tile against the batton so the blade pushes in that direction.
watch out for bits and dust(eyes and nose)

I bought a tile drill bit from b&q there are different sizes to choose from, marked the tile then used a small masonary bit first to form a small hole then used the tile drill bit to cut out the hole. before cutting into the tile i placed masking tape over the hole to be cut this will help to minimise slipping of the drill bits. Hope this helps LINJON

Scribe a square (carefull not to cross scribe lines) then scribe a smaller square within larger one (this acts as a kind of buffer zone protecting the intended scribes to early fractures) drill a hole (or use a lockboy) in the centre of tile. Take parrot nibblers to widen hole then when hole is large eneough take normal nibblers and snip away upto scribe marks. Take your time when snipping and don't be tempted to take off to much in the corners as a file will suffice.

Drill it with a bit from www.365drills.com and then use a pair of nippers to nip from the inside of the hole to the scored shape you made on the front of the tile.
