Something that might get deep this. And I'd like it if you guys kept it amicable like you usually do. But I wondered, if your boy or girl ended up being a tiler (not always like yourself EXACTLY perhaps they go down a different route but still end up tile)...

.. would you be proud of them?

Sorry if I chuck this in too early but years back, I realised that I was totally disillusioned with the whole "career" thing. I had what you could say was a successful regional sales role, and it hit me one night - after a young lady asked me what I did for work - not my name, not my interests, not what kind of a man I was. What I did for work.
I think I spent the next few days irritated by it, then realised that we define ourselves primarily by what we do. Our social status, our income, the car we drive, where we live, the clothes we wear etc etc etc.
Rubbish to it all I say. I started then to think more about who I was, than what I was.
Quit my career, started tile, now I like to think at least I spend more time concentrating on what I can do for those around me, especially my family, because money in the bank and a nice car is not as important as time with those we love and job satisfaction.
If my kids are happy, it doesn't matter what work they do.
I am teaching them that happiness is not dependent on what you do for work.

I'd love it. My father who is retired was a tiler his whole life, as well as two of his brothers, who moved to Australia in there 20s, and I glad he passed his skills on to me and showed me the way, he told me how it was and gave me the option, after I had tried a few jobs that were not going anywhere. I will do the same for my son.

At the moment, my eldest daughter (14) wants to teach music so that she is free to travel and not be stuck in one town.
My youngest daughter (11) doesn't know yet, but loves wildlife...
My eldest son (6) wants to be a builder. I'm hoping I can weed that out of him soon though!
My youngest son (2) wants to be a fireman.

I kind of wish I had the boys first because my 6yr old would then be able to come as an apprentice in 2 yrs if I had him first. My daughter - she's not interested!

This is a bit n/a for me as I'm never having any kids, BUT , if I things ended up being I had I kid I would certainly want them to come work with me and become a a Tiler and with a running start they would be a good Tiler and hopefully be happy with direction from the start of working life and go fourth and not have to work the crap we all did to get here

My son is 13 and I take with me during the school holidays...
He mainly dose the fetching and carrying, filling skips, and a bit of grouting.......he has ago on the sigma with the off cuts...
When he finishes school I would have him with me if he wants that......at the moment he doesn't seem that interested in tile.....more when we going to be finished and how much I'm I paying him !!
One thing I will say he has great people skills......I was finishing off a job once for an elderly lady, when I couldn't find him....popped my head round the living room door to see him having a cup of tea with her chatting away like it was his nan.
When we left she gave him a load of old books....worth a bob or two by the look of them.......and she kept saying what a lovely lad he was......lol

All that is important in life is to be happy with your family. Work gives you a massive sense of self fulfillment, and if you don't get that, your family will suffer. Money is massively important to anyone with children - you cannot get away from that easily, love your kids all you can but they are expensive. Encourage your children to find work they can enjoy and excel at, whether that is tile or brain surgery. And remember, you may never need a brain surgeon, but he almost certainly will need a tiler at some point!

One of the main reasons I started my own business is that when my son leaves school ( he's only just turned 5) I will hopefully be in a position to offer him the business if he wants to be a tiler as this will give him a good start in life.
If not I could always sell the business and use the money to help him.

My ex-wife didn't want our son who is now 27 to learn the trade.. Much to my dismay... Shame... end of an era when I stop.

As long as they were happy doing it and able to make a living I would be proud if either of my kids became tile. Not much chance though. My daughters at uni doing a masters in zoo conservation and my lad would only become a tiler if he could do it from the pc or by iPhone... lol..

I've got 2 sons, one is 18 and not interested in tile at all, been with me a few times and said it was hard graft, he's at college doing electrical engineering. The other is 14 and basketball daft, and wants to do physical education. As long as they don't end up 30 and........
