oh and pva as no place with in the tiling industry, and i dont think it would be nice to bodge it just so you can rent it out , just creating a massive problem which will cost loads in the long term

Same as NYBOR totally agree MDF is rubbish and is not suitable to tile on no matter what it is primed with, you need tile backer board or very good marine ply. otherwise the tiles will just blow again.

I take it you took the usual landlords route.......the cheapest option.

got to agree with all the advice above...NO to MDF and NO to PVA.

Two options - 1)cheap in short run = do as you have stated and then retile in a couple of weeks (which is more expensive in the end) or
    2) more costly in beginning = rip it out and start again doing it properly and then not have to worry about your tenants ringing you up next week

    Lets not fall out.
The chap asked for a bit of advice and hase been given sound advice as retiling onto the MDF will only cause further problems and possible leaks, damp and rot behind and below the shower. Its their house and their call.

Only do it once more, do it right and if your still not sure how to proceed, get a pro!

I'm assuming MDF there is the same as MDF here...used for trim, cabinets and doors. It has such a slick surface I'm surprised anyone could get a tile to stick to the surface long enough to even be able to grout it.

Read my thread again, I said 'usual' meaning most but not all, 9 out of 10 landlords want the cheapest option all the time.
