always best to remove the toilet, but I'm assuming in this case its not possible. I'd make a template, the same size as a field tile, out of either card or linoleum

Tep, make a template, I use paper myself as and when needed, I find it 'bends' into the curves easier, Simply make the paper the same size as the tile, place in place of the tile to be cut and scribe into the pedistal witha pencil.

    Hope it helps.

I keep a role of lining paper in the van for making templates as it is thick enough to draw round when the shape is cut and not to tear easily like newspaper does but thin enough to bend

I'm going to make a drawing and show you how I used to do it, and teach it, by scribing in. I'm sure I did this once somewhere on the forum but I can't find it after a quick look so I'll do it again.

You basically tile the full tiles, then get a tile and mark it to cut a straight triangle off the tile, and then offer the tile up as if you are trying to fit it in the place with the edge where the cut is butted upto the loo, then using a pencil you scribe in the shape and nibble almost all of it off, and then do it again for an accurate measurement that's exactly the shape of the loo.

The only time this doesn't work is if you're trying to script in the tile exactly at the front of the loo if it's exactly meeting the loo with a single tile (so not two with the centre of the loo being on the tile joint) - in which case you'd make a template, or take measurements and transfer those to the tile.

Each to their own though. Back soon with the drawings (if I don't get side-tracked)

    This one Dan.. Templates

    OK,

In the attached file (very simple drawings lol!) you should get an understanding.

Basically, 1 = shows you the object you're going to mark around. 2 = you fix the tiles around the cut you're going to make and mark (red) distance between the fixed tile and the object, then join those up and cut it off. Leaving you with a corner off the tile. Then offer that up again to the object as in 3 and the (green) distance between the object and the cut tile at each end should also give you the amount you need to cut off the tile to form the right shape.

So you get a pen and with your finger you you touch the object, whilst leaving the point of the pen on the tile right as close to the edge as you can near the cut corner and slide your finger around the object and you'll follow the shape and put it on the tile.

Then use the piano keys technique to cut the tile, or if you can and have a good blade you should be able to push the tile sideways a little on your cutter to cut the shape.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS measure twice, cut once, and if you need to, take a little less off as you can always take some more off, but if you take too much off you can't stick it back on... as they say.

How come you can't remove the toilet?

Is it because you are not confident of doing so? t
    he screws have rusted?
or is it because somebody has aleady tiled around it? if so are you planning on tiling on top of old tiles?

I find the most accurate way of making a template,is to use felt paper, you can get this from most flooring/carpet stockists. Maybe you could buy a part roll it can come in handy.cut a piece of felt paper the same size as your tile, but instead of trying to fit the template to exact shape of toilet, cut it 25mm short all the way around the bottom of pan.Get a piece of wood approx 50mm wide 150mm long.Place your template in position put your piece of wood against the base of pan draw a line on template 50mm back from pan move 25mm mark again repeat this all the way around base.when finished you will have exact shape on template. Next step place template on tile to be cut and transfare marks back on tile with 50mm wood. This will give exact shape on tile, hope this makes sense. Good luck, Half a mill Phil.

Hi Tony, What I did on this one was unscrew the two screws holding the toilet to the flood to enable me to slide a piece of thin card under so I could trace the curve of the toilet. As mentioned in earlier threads the card was the same size as the tiles. Place the card onto the tile and mark with a chinagraph, then cut to shape. Bingo job done...
