tiling onto old adhesive?
alright lads
Can anyone offer me a bit of advice? i want to tile a shower cubicle. i have stripped old tiles off walls. one of the walls is stud and the other is brick browning and plaster. my problem is where i've removed the old tiles and it has left the adhesive behind. Can i tile straight onto old adhesive or do i have to remove old adhesive? cheers

Re: tiling onto old adhesive?
you really want to get as much of the old addy off as poss to give yourself the flatest surface to tile onto. Without seeing it its difficult to see how easily it will come off but if it was tubbed adhesive that was used before try wetting it with warm water to see if it softens a bit. My guess is that it was cement addy which will be harder to remove. I would also be looking into using a tanking kit in a shower cubical to make it extra water tight before tiling. There's loads of advice on this forum regarding tanking if your not sure what i mean. Hope that helps a bit.

Re: tiling onto old adhesive?
as with lc on this the only other comment i can make is i would use a 10mm trowel to ensure that any lumps can be overcome when tiling.

Same as CJ and lcjohno.
Get yourself a Gundlach scraper from Tradetiler - does the business when trying to scrape off old adhesive
