Each area of the country is different mate. As for being ripped of normally the customers that get the cheap quote out of the 3-4 they get and take them, end of getting ripped of through crap work rubbish materials and guys with no insurance etc.
What you should be looking for is someone to come in and discuss your requirments give you some ideas exlain what they propose and what you are getting ie all materials ie adhesive, grout, tanking and including trims etc.

| Re: tiling charges | | Depends what area you are from, i don't charge sqm if i can help it as it depends on size of tiles, how much cutting, are they ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, what prep work is needed, so a bit more info would help you get a bit more of a ball park figure. |

Welcome to the Forums!!!
I would be more concerned that the Tiler you employ comes across as professional, highlights any potential issues and reassures you, that you are going to get the sort of job you want.
I have been to look at two jobs today and in both cases the customers had marble. It is going to cost more for me to put it right than they paid to have the job done. One lady even said her husband had gone with the tiler because he was £400 cheaper than the other quote they had received. So beware cheapest is not always best

| Re: tiling charges | | as the guys say,the cheapest estimate does not mean you will get a professional job done mate.Try asking at your tile distributors if they can recommend a few tilers to give you estimates,
you could actually ask each tiler if he knows the previous tiler you had the quote from, that way you will get to know the standard of workmanship available to you,if none are known to each other BEWARE.
personally i would never slag off another tiler unless i had seen his work, same as i would never recommend a tiler without seeing his work.
Just be careful, and make sure you get a written quotation listing all materials to be used, how long the job will take and of course the total price you will have to pay,DO NOT be afraid to ask as many questions as you feel necessary and ask the tiler if he can see any pitfalls in the job

I would be interested to hear what you all think, as i'll have to start thinking about estimates before too long.. | | |

| Re: tiling charges | | Hi. I get alot of customers ringing me and asking if I would be able to give a rough estimate over the phone. This is impossible as there is so much to consider (as enduro has pointed out). As for removing tiles in preparation, I would charge by the hr as it is difficult to tell how the walls will hold up after removing the tiles. If the old tiles are fixed to a solid wall then most of the time they will come off quick and no problem but if they're fixed to plasterboard then most of the time the board behind will come off with the tile and then will need replacing. This is the reason why I would charge by the hr for prep work. It would be worthwhile for you to choose tilers that have been vetted e.g a member of the tile trade association TTA. To be a member, you would need to be tiling for over 2yrs and the TTA would get in touch with there previous customers too. Not all tilers who have worked for over 2yrs are members but would give you a bit of confidence. Personally I would take a portfolio along to quotes and in there I have pictures of previous work with recommendations and phone numbers if you wanted to contact previous customers. If I was choosing a trades person then I would go with recommendations if possible, if not knowledge and professionalism goes along way!! Good luck | I feel the need, the need for speed!
