Hardiebacker in my experience is not flat and requires mechanical fixing to help pull it straight.

i can answer for grumps(i hope thats ok grumps). he simply means screws which will pull any slightly curved boards back in line with studs whereas an adhesive would only stick it in the shape of the board

I know that PL premium is a good adhesive for sticking CBU (it is a polyurethane subfloor adhesive and comes in the large format caulking tubes).
I typically use it on the corners as it is waterproof and strong.
Down side is the long drying time, although it will adhere to damp or even wet materials.
I also run a bead on the stud if there is no vapor barrier as it bonds the board really tight when used with screws.
When dry the job rings like a bell when tapped rather than rattle.
You should use spf when bonding it as a subfloor.

I have the scoring knife Malcolm, I find it does a good job. It is still going strong and I have cut a lot of sheets with it. it also does a fine job as a tile scribe too!

I have found that using a stucco rasp to smooth the rough edges is invaluable as when you snap it there will be roughness. So a quick bit of work with the rasp and it is a nice clean edge.
I install lots of hardibacker and prefer it to the wonderboard or durock.
Don't be scared to put a few extra studs in key places (vertical and crossbracing) to make the fixing easier and use PL polyurethane or whatever equivalent you have in the UK behind on the wood just prior to placing the piece, that is, unless you are using vapor barrier behind.

The problem we have Doug, is with us being a distribution company we would be treading on our customers toes so to speak.
We have a few companies who sell our products in Kendal.
If we open too many branches we would go from a distribution company to a retail company like topps.
Anyway i hope everyone had a great xmas and new year!!!
Hope we all have a better year than the last !!!
