    Miss, Tiler,
I really like the marlin too, what base board did you use? I've had a client ask about a marble mosaic to put in his garden. He wants it to just sit in the earth as a feature. It won't be walked on just be there as a fragment. Would hardiebacker work?

Welcome Miss Tiler and Mosaic Girl! Awesome to see more mosaic work!!

That marlin is amazing Miss Tiler! Was it set into a walkway? A fountain? Do you have a picture of it in the garden?

I really like the gekko on the large rock Mosaic Girl! Fun, fun, fun!

I finally got my itty bitty tiles!! I will have a web site up hopefully by the end of the week. I am so excited! It was really hard not to break into them and start gluing! Ha!!

    Hi
Just joined this group as I love mosaics. By trade Im a tiler but I also do mosaics, not just the sheets. I recently finished a comission of a Marlin to go in the customers garden (you'll see a pic of at the side). Its just under a metre wide and I used 20 x 20 glass mosaics cut into quarters. Its another string to my bow!

    cheers

micci - Weldbond is supposed to be good for wet areas and for outdoors. I've used it and it dries perfectly clear which is nice. Can't wait to see your design!!

Musivarius- Glad to see you here! Your work is beautiful!! You are certainly right on the art part being easier at the begining. It is not cheap to get it wrong either!!

    Hi micci,
I've used Mapei Keraquick before and I've been looking at using this for some mosaic panels to go in a garden. I've been told in the shop that this is fine but I'm going to check on the forum.
Don't Hardibacker recommend a membrane to go behind the boards for wet areas?
That's the thing about mosaic work isn't it, the 'art' side is easy but if you get the mechanics, adhesives etc wrong then yiou're stuffed!

    Hi everyone.
Finally decided on the design. Took me a while to decide as I had to many images to choose from !

Salkns, thanks for the advice re Hardibacker, I think there is a 6mm depth Hardibacker, which I was considering using. If I placed the mosaic tiles onto this then placed the boards onto the wall. I am hoping for a flush finish between mosaic & tiling, however I will have to see how this goes.

Does anyone have any preference of adhesive ? I was thinking of a water resistant adhesive due to it being placed into a bathroom.

    Looking forward to getting started.

Hi, I've just joined the forum for advice on technical stuff mainly. I make copies of Greek annd Roman mosaics using marble and smalti. Usually my work is for museums but now I'm going for more private clients, the aim is to get commissions for large floors. Also I'm teaching and I'm always being asked about the best adhesives etc so I need to be sure I give the right advice.

Lofthouse, Sorry, I forgot to answer below...Feeding a picture into your computer and pixelating it helps alot with color. I use 3/8" tiles that come in something like 60 different colors. A lot of blues and greens, but not that many shades of red yet...I always lay out the whole design, take a few steps back and change the tiles I want before I ever glue anything down. I can't wait to check out your link!!

Wow! Great to see postings. Thanks to all for the interest and sharing.

Micci- I LOVE MERMAIDS!!!! How great!! Do you have a particular image in mind? I use MDF and Hardibacker for my mosaics depending, but for your project I would suggest Hardibacker. Just make sure you seal it, or use green board. Maybe I am not really the one who should be answering. I don't do my mosiacs on walls or floors, just used to work for a builder...

permalink, I don't use trays. I have tried them and I do not like how crooked my tiles come out. The tiles I used are not perfectly the same size. Some are tight in the trays I have and some are loose and it is impossible for me to get them as straight as I want them. That is my quandry right now...I would love to have the speed and ease of using the trays...I just don't like the effect....so I glue them down one by one. Nice thing about Hardibacker is it had a grid pressed into it and it gives me something to follow while I'm laying the tiles.

I sold the lady on the beach to the owner of an art gallery, and brought the sea turtle in last week. Someone walked in while I was there delivering it and bought it! I'm working on 2 others right now...one is "Rainbow Row" which is a famous street in Charleston, SC, and the other is a facade of a bulding in Charleston. Hopefully they will sell as well. It's a crapshoot....

I'll post the sea turtle. I hope you all post some of your pictures as well. I LOVE seeing other peoples work. It inspires me!!
