Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has used the Wunda overfloor heating with the backer boards dry fitted as a floating surface with taped joints? The backer boards are put at the top of the overfloor heating without an adhesive or any screed and then there is an adhesive of type S2 (very flexible) at top of the backer boards and then tiles at top of it.

Thanks
Pawel

I would never tile it. Ever. No matter what the company say.
I've seen too many failures.
Switch to a different heating system first.

Hi all,

I am just a DIY guy and I've installed wunda overfloor heating myself and added those backer boards at top of it. The backer board description states: It can be dry fitted as a floating surface with taped joints or alternatively bonded directly to the floor heating panels. The purpose of those backer boards is to protect the heating system and I wanted to avoid using adhesive directly onto the heating pipes. I've checked few times with Wunda technicians and they said few times that their customers have dry fitted it and had no complaints at all.

The professional tiler started tiling today and within few days it should be all done. Although we decided to use the silicone instead of the grout. I'll post few photos when it's all finished.

Thanks
Pawel

I hope your backer boards are not the wedi.marmox type board or they will insulate and not let the heat through .

If (and I suspect he has) the professional tiler has indeed used silicone in place of grout...
Can we dare say he's not professional?!

Yes, he is professional. I also know that silicone will need to be replaced in few years time and it's not very common to use silicone instead of grout. But it can be used especially when there may be some movement.

Those are the backer boards:

Hi @PawelM ,

I’m in a similar situation having laid the overfloor heating system and looking for advice before tiling. Can you provide an update on your outcome? I’m keen to know if the floating backer boards worked and if you’ve had any issue since

Many thanks
