Hi there, i would like to ask a few things about ufh mats? I have tiled lots of floors but i am currently working on a job and am laying a ufh mat for the first time. Im laying onto a concrete floor a builder has recently "leveled" with slc (hes not done a good job!).
I laid the mat today and stuck it down with some flexi adhesive but didnt cover the element wires before i started tiling. After reading other posts on here i feel should of levelled of to the top of the wires with slc or the adhesive? i have been using my usual trowl and have been very careful in spreading out the adehesive teasing it over rather than digging in the grooves but am wondering how delicate the wires are and am i likely to have damaged them with my trowl? i had to take a tile up and put more adhesive under could this of damaged them? im obviously a little worried the mat wont work and was just after some advice, has anyone ever damaged a ufh mat?

Hi and welcome..

Do you test the wires as you lay the tiles, just in case..

You should always have an alarm/monitor connected to the heatmat while working on it do you now instantly if you damage it. They only cost a few quid.

it's possible you may have damaged them, if you think you may have it may be an idea to get an electrician to test it before you go any further.

not heard of one of them stew, where do you get them? i'll have to invest in one

All the heatmat suppliers normally have them in accessories section online....

Warm up have one in every kit, called a watchdog and runs off 2 aa batteries.

i just fitted a warmup kit over the wknd bri, wasn't one in the box,it was sealed before i opened it. i'll have to get one of those for next time.

They normally come taped to the thermostat Mike, maybe they've stopped giving them away to cut costs?? I'm sure they're only about 6 quid to buy.

the thermostat was seperate, supplied by homebase who i'm doing the job for. still no tester with it tho

I defintately did'nt nick or dig into any of the wires but may have brushed over lightly while spreading the adhesive, are the wires really delicate?

I normally fit "HeatMat" and they are quite robust, but some of the cheaper mats seem quite delicate IMO.

Maybe just certain suppliers do them, there was one with my last order which was 3 weeks ago. Maybe it's only with the digital thermostats or on certain sized mats? Not sure now!!!!!

They were giving them as free gifts at the recent Mapei day...I have one, so does my brother

Ahhh but this was the day with Raychem, Fila and Rubi attending........did I mention I got a tester among other things ?

its a vysal mat? its probably me just being paranoid and i no its hard to tell without seing what i have done but appreciate your advice. For future reference is it best to use a slc or will the adhesive be good enough to use to cover the wires?

I prefer a flexible slc.....

SLC is best

as above, i also use a plastic trowel in case some cables are on the surface

Slc for me also..

Great thanks alot guys, is there a limit to how thick you can apply the slc and then the adhesive? does the heat still get through?

I tend just cover the wires so there not visible...
