Default Underfloor Heating

Hi again,
i will be starting a job soon which consists of laying undertile heating on top of floorboards. My question is should i put backer board down or ply wood? the floor boards are in good condition but i were`nt quite sure whether the backer board was necessary.
Regards Mark.

use backer board for insulation mate otherwise you will spend most of the time heating the floor boards up. with backerboard the tiles will warm up quicker saving money on electric as well

I have to agree but sadly, it is not always possible/practicle. Wood itself is in fact quite a good insulator so not that much would be lost anyway. Drawback with backerboards and insulating boards is the additional height created as normally when you have finished you will have lifted the level by something like 25mm once you have boarded, laid the heating, skimmed then tiled.

Customers choice really.
