Re: what licence do I need?
Hi Will,
Technically you don't need a licence in South Australia. You would be able to work self employed on domestic jobs or you would be able to gain employment with a commercial company as a subcontractor. You just wouldn,t be able to take commercial contracts on yourself. There are a couple of commercial companies there that hire on meterage rates and used to pay pretty decent money when i was there. But nowadays there are a lot of Afgan's in Adelaide cutting the bottom out of the market. One of my mates there has recently droped from 90 guys to 30 or so due to it being a lot harder finding work.
As long as your pretty Versatile and your works of good Quality you should fine something.
Aussie Dave

No worries mate. I'm actually in England at the moment. Heading back Sun for a week then back here for another six weeks. I've got a tiling and stoneware company based out of Brisbane but we do work all over the country. Hows work going for you in the UK at the moment/

if you plan to be self employed then you do need a licence in adelaide - this is available from Consumer Affairs and can take 6-8 weeks to get . Iwould expect they would want to see cert 3 tiling quals plus i think you need to do a business course .You could work without one but not many builders would touch you ,you cant advertise and your customers have no legal obligation to pay you ! , the only legal option would be to work for another tiler

Well there you go, things must have changed since I was there last. I guess thats another State government that has jumped on the bandwagon of making more money out of tradies. Just because you have a licence doesn't mean to say you can tile.
I've done no end of jobs for the BSA in QLD fixing up shonky tiling work done by tilers, and they were all licenced and even managed to keep their licence's after not going back to fix their work.......

Re: what licence do I need?
The SA licence scheme actually goes back to the early 80's - i held mine from 1986 to 2005,when i moved to vic ( which has none ) so it sounds like you were working unlicenced Dave !! although the odds of getting busted ( and the $1000+ fine ) are pretty slim .Iworked in Broken Hill for a while and the fair trading dept would come out in force from Sydney and raid every building site in town ,and of course handing out big fines to anybody withouut a nsw licence. While i agree there are plenty of dodgy licenced tilers ,it does give the consumer a bit more protection and helps to keep the handymen out of the trade

Re: what licence do I need?
I was working in Adelaide on and off from 2000 to 2003. Mainly working on Commercial contracts for big commercial builders like Westfield, Built Environs and several shopfitting companies. Did the odd house for a residential builder too. I was never asked for a licence number, and I even asked 'Westfield' (which was the first builder I worked for there) if My QLD or NSW licence would be reciprocated in SA and they told me not to worry about it as I didn't need one in SA. I just heard on the grape vine that you need one for commercial work since then.
It does give the consumer a bit more protection, but I have seen far too many cases where the BSA have washed their hands of jobs because they have been to hard to fix. All they are interested in is their fee's every year. I have three different licences in QLD so they make their fair share off me.
Not to sure how they deal with problems in NSW, I haven't done any rectification work there for the building board.
I know you can get a reciprocal licence in NSW with a QLD one, Can this also be done with a SA licence???????
