Emmigrating to Australia with my partner please help !
Hi All,
I am new to the tiling world. I did a 4 week course last may and have been self employed ever since to be honest the work has been fairly consistent and im very happy with the progress and quality of my work. I would like more work to come in but these things take time.
Anyway my girlfriend is head of biology at a respectable secondary school for 3 years and im looking to go over with her as I appreciate the lenth of my experience would not be valid to allow my resdidency in oz yet.
However she didnt complete a significant part of her training PGCE due to family illness to which is needed for us to live in oz. She is trying to re do this now but its very rare and hard for this to be done now that she is a qualified teacher.
So back to myself as a tiler it may be a case of trying to get in to oz through me.
If anyone can give me some advice on how many years experience I would need I think its 4 years before im eligble to apply and do I need to do my nvq level 3 ? When applying do I need to prove my lenth of service through bank statements etc ??
Im just trying to get a realistic look at what I need to do to get there or wether im wasting my time.
Im sure many people on the forum have been in similiar situations so id really appreciate your feedback on this.
Thanks Loads !!!
MIke MJM Tiling !!!

Re: Emmigrating to Australia with my partner please help !
Trust me , Australia is the pace to be. Beautiful place.
I am not sure how the points system works these days but back in 2001 Tilers got next to nowt points but Nurses were very high up the chain. i reckon between you you would do well on the points system as I beleive teachers are a sought after item.
As stated we have a migration sponsor so maybe give him a nudge.Wall and floor tiler in the West Midlands, Dudley, Stourbridge. www.nptiling.co.uk

I think from what I remember, it does depend on which state you want to go to. But tilers are needed in some states. Different visa's apply though or something.

Hi Mate
Tiling is on the skills shortage list , from memory it's four years experience and a long old road of applications - i'll let the Immigration expert tell you exactly what you need .
So is your girlfriend a qualified teacher or not? If she is and has the PGCE , not the GTP , then you'd be better off her applying . To go together , if you are not married you'll have to prove you are defacto spouse - i'e as good as married . This can be dfficult if you don't have kids .
Best of luck , if you want it bad enough you'll get it . See you there !

Re: Emmigrating to Australia with my partner please help !
you need at least 4 years experience plus a aqf3 m8 ! its all changed in oz due to the credit crunch and to many people applying ! and your not guaranteed to get where you want to go , as its down to wot states tilers are needed in ! ive been trying to get into nsw for ever.... but unfortuantly they dont need tilers . so may have to do 2 years hard yak in the bush
its a nighmare and a long road with no light at the end ... !! ive also got my nvq2 and currently doing my nvq3 and my AQF3 which helps to find work there.. i hope !
good luck !! still worth doing tho i recon .

Re: Emmigrating to Australia with my partner please help !
Mike,
For starters you will need to do your AQF 3, then get Skills Recognition through Trades Recognition Australia. There will be a new points system in July this year, which (surprisingly) does not favour tradies.
Quickest and easiest way in is through employer sponsored, especially in regional areas, but it is hard to find a sponsor.
State Sponsorship is next. The rules vary from state to state, but most states now demand many years post-qualification experience. There are various settlement requirements as well.
You can also apply independently, but processing times are ridiculously long.
Finally you could come on a student visa, do a 24 month tiling course in Perth (which allows you to work part time) and hope that by the end of your course there still is a pathway into permanent residence.
Follow the link below to find out what the proposed points test looks like (65 points are needed !) :
http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/gener...oints-fact.pdf
So it might pay to brush up on your English skills, sit an IELTS test and score an extra 20 points ! How ironic is that. As a native speaker you are considered to have competent English, without the need for an IELTS test.
Feel free to contact me directly if you want more information about migration to Oz, butI hope that you appreciate that there is a limit to the amount of free advice I can give. I get contacted by quite a few visitors who frequent this forum, which is great, but I do have my expenses and I do have to make a living as well.
Best of luck,

Re: Emmigrating to Australia with my partner please help !
cheers dave I think the best route is if jane applies and arrange it through her. I would need 3 years more experience and nvq3 etc and by that time oz will prob hav enough tilers !!!
How about NZ do you know if its the same rules over thre ?? aaaaahhh pesky immigration !
Like you said if you want it bad enough we'll get there !

Re: Emmigrating to Australia with my partner please help !
Nick Thanks alot for your indepth advice I was not aware of the student visa route thats something i will look into. I will take all the information on board many would say I cant speak english now but thats just my accent its good to know you could gain an extra 20 points by sitting an IELTS test. I'll keep a note of your name Nick and get back to you direct at a later date after speaking with my partner.
Many Thanks !
Mike

Re: Emmigrating to Australia with my partner please help !
From what I know you need a license to be a Tiler in Australia. How you go about getting it though I'm not sure, think you have to demonstrate your skills out there...

Re: Emmigrating to Australia with my partner please help !
You do NOT need a license to work as a tiler in Australia, if you are employed by a licensed contractor. You only need a license if you are working as a self-employed contractor. The requirements on getting a contractor's license vary from state to state. In Queensland, in order to be able to get a contractor's license you need, amongst others, to :
-have formal trade qualifications
-do a business management course
-have a certain amount of capital (depending on turn-over)
-references and evidence of work carried out in Queensland
-no criminal convictions or bankruptcies
You can find the requirements for Queensland here :
When is a Licence Required?
You can find out all the different requirements in the various states via the links in the state government web-sites.
