Totant just a thought if your currently looking for tilers abroad then why not advertise on the forum there's plenty of interest and you can view their work in their albums ect so you have a chance to view before you agree
its a big commitment to move to oz but maybe your company would be interested in sponsoring ,
that way tiler knows he has some work when they arrive
its a win win situation as far as i can see might be worth some thought

Jay - am new to forum and not really up to scratch how it all works- kinda jumped in deep end - so thanks for idea. Our company is currently applying to be an approved business sponsor. I will definately look at the advertising option once (if) we get the green light.

Terry- 175 visa is the ideal no question. It is permenant residence status which a 457 isn't. However although the new SOL lust includes tiling which is fantastic an application for this Visa can take up to 2 years to process and cost you on top of agents fees 7k government fees.

On top of that you then need to establish yourself here which can take a while to get the cash flow going.

A condition if a 457 visa is that the sponsoring company has to submit a contract of employment and prove the wage being paid is in line with what an Australian is being paid. There are companies in all trades/ areas abusing this but from my knowledge this is related to Asian workers.

A 457 can last upto 4 years , however you are bound to work for the sponsor only and this could be used to take advantage of you.

On top of that if the company sponsoring you ran out of work and laid you off you would have 28 days to find an alternative sponsor or see ya!

Aussie employers do not favour Aussie workers, infact because ofthe shortage of labour and glut if work a lot if Aussie workers have become a little acustomed to an easy life. In addition the shortage has also encouraged " non professionals in to all trades" to take advantage of the demand.

If you are good you will be respected as so and paid accordingly.

If you were to consider a 457 you need to find a company who are prepared to employ you - on the books. In order for this to happen you would have to demonstrate you skills on the flesh- I'm afraid a photo history of work might will not meet the cut.

If you are serious I would contact tcomoanies in the area you would wush to move to and if possible make an agreement in principle. If all seems above board I think you need to budget to come over here and show what you are made of! - at current prices £1000.00 airfare is small change to gamble compared to a full move over here.

I'm rambling now - too many Fat Yaks on a Friday.
Please, please contact a MARA visa agent in Oz and discuss options with the experts.

Any other questions am happy to help where I can.

    cheers

The going rate isn't going to really mean anything with the fluctuating exchange rate . You need to compare it to other tradie wages . My pomme brickie friend was looking at 2-300 bucks a day , and other tradies were similar , could vary though .

We are paying min 40 bucks / m2 for standard 3x3 ceramic floor upto 80/m2 for 3x6 travertine with free issue ads & grouts. Most of our tilers are taking a minimum of 2500 a week some alot more. Out of all tradies tilers are currently out earning most.

Hi, that is great to know about Perth becoming hungry for tilers. My husband(who is sat beside me) is an experienced wall and floor tiler. We are with an immigration company who is dealing with our visa and he is currently in the process of obtaining his AQF111. Not only does he tile kitchens, bathrooms and conservatories but has worked on football stadiums(Blackburn Rovers), hair salons, complex geometric victorian floor designs and many more. He has numerous references and photographic evidence of his work, which still doesn't show his full potential. We are also in the process of contacting recruitement agencies in Australia to see if he could possibly be sponsored so we could speed up our visa's. We have three children and originally wanted to settle in South Australia(Adelaide), but if you could advise us on the potential boom in Perth and any companies you know of which might be interested in having a look at us. Many thanks in advance for your response. Caroline and Dave.
