Re: Emigrating to Australia
I spent a year out there working as a tiler. The one problem you'll find, is that tiling is REALLY REALLY substandard there. I saw some horiffic tiling jobs. If you want to make yourself look good, then australia is awesome. If you really want to be good, then learn from english boys.

Re: Emigrating to Australia
I'm not sure all those quals would be necessary as it would almost certainly be self employment. If you check out the availabilty of work out there you'll find its all apprenterships. I had a look ages ago and it certainly looks like they like to make use of the young lads then spit them out when they move up on wages, not unlike the UK was 15year ago.

Re: Emigrating to Australia
I TOTALLY AGREE!!! I cleaned houses for several years and the tiling sucks. Especially in the showers. They don't drain properly. C'mon over you guys and sort these cowboys out...some healthy competition is in order!
I tiled my kitchen floor (1st tiling job) and i recon it's better than a lot of the so called professional jobs i've seen.....and i'm a gal! I learned off the internet...just wish i could work this website better.
ps i've got some good marketing ideas for quality uk tilers! You could band together and clean up!

Re: Emigrating to Australia
Totaly disagree with you Dave-T, im a geordie tiler, now living in sydney and the standard of tiling is far better here, first of all you have to be licenced here so it cuts out the cowboys. Not saying you are a crap tiler personely, dont know where you were working here, but my experiance 25 years reckon that the workmanship is good here. You dont have the problems of cutting around ****ty toilets and vanitys as the bathrooms are empty here except bath. , the walls are always top notch and the floors are always screeded with sand & cement, that goes a long way to doin the the perfect tiling job. anyway thats my thought, it would be a boring world if we all thought the same cheers carl

Re: Emigrating to Australia
Mate that is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard! At least we still have apprenticeships & can't go out & call ourselves a tiler after a short course. Sure we have our share of cowboys, but their are a lot of us experienced guys here who do fantastic work. Don't believe me? Check out my album for a start.

Re: Emigrating to Australia
Hi detroitMi,
Yes we have tilers over here. A lot of us learn via a 4 year apprenticeship. Don't believe everything you read on this inter web thingy. Everyone has an opinion & sometimes they can be way wide of the mark.
Having said that if you are a decent tiler & work hard, there is no reason why you couldn't make a good fist of it here.

Re: Emigrating to Australia
Don't listen to the negative rubbish being spouted; they have no idea what they are talking about - no offence DAVE-T!
I've lived in Perth, I went out there on Skilled Migration Visa, been back in UK a year now.
If you’re looking for work in and around Perth WA then I’ll give you a contact -
(FGT) MCCANN'S TILING Call “Stuart McCann" mobile: 0412 913 881
(For more info send us a PM, help if I can)
If your good he'll give you work and believe me, he is always busy. You will work on big tiling jobs and always on properties priced from $1 to $5 million. Jobs can be anything from 100sqm up to the largest house I worked on in Applecross, 1200sqm of polished porcelain and that was just on the floor. The jobs I worked on were of a very high standard and very professional - nothing but 100% on every job. Work with lots of Travertine, Marble, Mosaic, porcelain etc..
There's good and bad everywhere...

Re: Emigrating to Australia
Hi Grazer,
my husband is british but he grew up in Germany, where he did his 3 year- apprenticeship to become a Tiler. We live since 2006 in England and my husband is still amazed about the "tiling" they deliver here and they still think they've done a brilliant job. Unfortunately you can become a Tiler here in 2 weeks time. So I'm glad to here that you have appranticeships for Tiling.
Thanks
and enjoy a nice

Re: Emigrating to Australia
Funny that. One of my Australian apprentices spent some time in the UK after he got his qualifications and he made the exact same comment about English tilers...
But I agree, there are some cowboys here (usually unlicensed) who do some shocking work. There are also many very good tradespeople doing superb work.
You find that most of the crap work is done on large commercial developments, high rises and apartment blocks.Time pressure, low rates of pay and lousy concreting and sheeting work all contribute to the poor end result.
I was surprised to see some really bad tiling in Spain and some of the best quality tiling I have ever seen was in Japan ! Just perfect !Qualified Wall and Floor Tiler
