Re: anyone with a family moved to oz
Then you may have read it wrong. Australia was all positive for myself and the kids...family spoilt it. Its a warning to make sure you and all your immediate family understand about your move.
Australia is , Warm, Healthy, Open spaces, Better lifestyle, Friendly and i would go back this second if my situation were different.Wall and floor tiler in the West Midlands, Dudley, Stourbridge. www.nptiling.co.uk

Re: anyone with a family moved to oz
In 2001 when i went i didnt need any qualifications. I turned up and worked. Seems its all changed now though.
I will be too old to go back to Australia, actually i am now .
As for doing it for you and the family can hop on a plane it sounds all well and good....We thought that too and as sooon as we left the country the trouble started. It will cost you nothing to talk it through with close family and make sure they realise its a long way.Wall and floor tiler in the West Midlands, Dudley, Stourbridge. www.nptiling.co.uk

Re: anyone with a family moved to oz
deffo do your homework and research the area you plan to go to as siramic has said its a long way away there is work if you want to work housing is dearer in general same with most groceries interest rates are nearly double your current ones and set to rise more soon . lifestyles are diff but depends on your style plenty to see and do depends on were you go the heat maybe a factor some areas of oz start work at 4 am and stop around 1 pm to avoid the heat ,the heat and humidity are save re in certain areas also be prepared to share your property with nature (spiders snakes goannas ect) just do your research (the grass may look greener but is it)

Re: anyone with a family moved to oz
I moved here 2 years ago with 3 boys 5, 6 & 7.
At first they loved the adventure which kinda distracted them from the upheaval of the move.
At times although almost never now they would have a tear for bunnies left behind but other than that they have all adapted very well. They think 20c cold now!
They love their school which are excellent.
You need to be a strong family unit to make the move. Men find it lot easier than the women generally who tend to have closer ties with there immediate family.
You need to bear this in mind as I do know many couples with and without children who have been pulled differnt ways by the experience.
The only practical advice that I could give is this
1/. Agree with your partner that you will stick it out untill you gain citizenship (4-5 years)-atleast then if you decide to go and live back in the uk or any other country you and your children will have dual nationality and the option will always be open to you ( and your children) to come back.
2/. If you have a regular routine with your children like bedtimes, mealtimes, walking dogs, visit to Maccas then keep to it when you get here. Although the setting is different the routine itself will really help your nippers ( and you)
3/. School drop off and pick ups are excellent way of making new friends- especially important for your wife- she will be missing her best mate and Mum more than you know and may feel quite isolated. You will probably be working as normal so it will be easier for you.
Good luck - I'm sure your kids will be fine - mine and everyone I know with similar aged children are all fine and better off for the move. Be prepared and expect some seperation anxiety from the missus Though!

Re: anyone with a family moved to oz
The experience of immigrating is completely unique to everyone . Some poeple I knew would never ever go back to the U.K , whereas some , like us could never quite settle . Statistics say that a quarter return , of them a lot then go back to OZ.
When all is said and done, the thing that will tear you most is family .
IMO the lifestyle , especially for kids ( I have 2 boys ) is unquestionably better .
As for the cost of things , it's all relative to income . Some things you'll think are expensive in comparison, and visa versa . I.E Interest Rates V The price of petrol . The other thing to bear in mind when you try and compare is that the exchange rate is always changing . It was 2.5 dollar to the pound when we went out , it's now 1.7 .
From what I experienced in Perth , the world recession hardly touch us , whereas the UK is/was in a dire situation .
There's only one way to find out . Good luck

Re: anyone with a family moved to oz
Hi Mate, I put a post on another thread which relates to your question, we more or less lived most of the time in a rural area, excellent community spirit, you will find a lot of migrants from all over , I didn't get into the Pommie scene, but if you like football, cricket, rugby ....... youll make loads of mates, and if your kids take sport, undoubtably you will find yourself helping out, I ended up coaching, becoming an acredited football and cricket coach , umpiring cricket on occaision running a 5 a side football club ,helping out with the rugby coaching, and helping the Aussie Rules coach !! made a lot of friends doing this sort of stuff, also off road driving clubs great way to spend your weekends and holidays, yep plenty of second jobs for Mums and Dads in Oz !!. My Wife didnt work for 10 years, but after a couple of agency jobs she was taken on as a casual at a Pharmacy suppliers, been there 10 years got a good job and made some top friends. She still has her strong Oldham accent, as I have still got my Manchester one, so br prepared to be very busy !!! Ok mate, if you have any questions just ask and I hope I can help, depending on where you go, S E Queensland is the area where we have always lived, top spot !! ok Seeya Steve aka ozboz.....

Re: anyone with a family moved to oz
Top tip for Aussie wannabees Use Facebook to make mate in Oz well in advance. I did it and have about 10 tiler mates and loads more Aussies in the area I wanted to move. It could help with the work situation once you land. Remember Australia has a real who you know mentality.

Re: anyone with a family moved to oz
My dad his Mrs and my two half sisters moved to the Sunshine coast(S.E. Queensland) 4 years ago when the girls where 10 and 13, none of them had been to Oz before but sold everything over here and took what they could in suitcases. They came back to the uk christmas before last for a couple of weeks to see family and it confirmed that they'd done the right thing in going to Oz, yes they miss friends and family but they now have a good group of mates over there, mostly aussies who have moved from other parts a couple of kiwis and a few english. My dad went over there with the intention of working part time and did for a short time but is now working 6-7 days a week, in his words it aint that bad if you finish at 1pm and walk the 5 mins to the beach then the surf club (beer and sports). The girls like school as much if not more than they did in the uk and sport aussie accents and adapted quite quickly as most kids do, the people who seem to struggle with the relocation are the ones that go out with the idea oz is England with sunshine, yes its comparable but there are differences and you have to work at adapting and building friendships from scratch. I think there are a few ex pat forums that will be worth a look to see what other people have experienced but it will be different for every family, as said by other posters both partners need to be as sure as possible because its a hell of a long way away not just a 24 hour flight, sometimes 30 hours travelling and the adjustment to temperature and time difference not to mention cost.
I've been over to visit twice, 7 weeks in total with my Mrs, 3yo daughter and 8 month old son and i love the place and the people my wife to be is close to family over here and i think she'd struggle to move, but she has mentioned its a possibility recently so no pressure but we'll see. The fact we've stopped in a touristy area may have something to do with it but in general the aussies we met were more friendly, welcoming and helpful than folk back in the uk, the parks and play areas for the kids are more frequent and less vandalised than the uk and children are more accepted in general than in the uk so using the kids as an excuse to emigrate is understandable. The exchange rate is rubbish at the moment, used cars are more expensive, fuel is cheap, grocerys are more expensive and you need to factor in health insurance etc. If you look at the local papers you'll see the usual depressing headlines so dont expect a dreamworld, but the aussies appreciate a grafter and don't suffer fools.
If my Mrs comes round to the idea wholly then i'll give it a go if possible, i'd be proud to be an Aussie (even a plastic one).
