Hello to everyone in the forum, I am a tiler nvq level 3 with 9 years experience and heading to Melbourne with the “ball and chain” on a years working visa in September can anyone let me know how things are out there and has anyone got any contacts or tips how to get work, would be much appreciated, thanks

South Yarra but will locate to wherever the work is. Been on jobsites on the web and there doesn’t seem to be alot of tiling jobs posted there , should I bring many tools with me? Also is there much variation in tiling methods. thanks

hi you may want to look around first its a bit dog eat dog around melb at pres be like starting all over again tool wise see how much it costs to bring or is it cheaper to replace .variation in work a bit your 15mm ply underboarding is non existant here with timber floors nearly all tilers use 6mm cement sheet over the top of whats there and tile on we dont have any probs you will need to get w/p licence .abn number and you may need a tiling ticket depending on area hope that helps

I do not think I require w/p licence or abn number as I will only be in Melbourne for less than a year so plan to be employed not start my own business, What are tiling rates at the mo down there or would I be on a set wage if employed. Jay you said its dog eat dog how bad are thing there do you think i should consider another city. thanks

One of the local tilers to me emmigrated just before xmas last year but things are not going well and he is aiming to return to the UK in October. This is due so i am told by working long hours for a lot less pay than he is used to.
When i was out there i had none of these problems, yes the pay was lower but due to floors being large and plentiful it made up for it. After 11 months in Oz i had earned more than in the previous year in the UK.

If you are working for someone then you must expect lower rates, i was self employed though.

wot part of oz m8 ? iam thinking about emmigrating to oz soon as house prices rise! how much money was he getting and wot hours ?
