tiling in Adelaide
Hi i'm new to this site & would appreciate some feedback from tilers down under.
I'm moving to adelaide in may 09 & would like to know if there is plenty of work ? I have been a tiler for 4 years & have read that i need a AQF111 certificate before I can even consider tiling in Australia but at £3,000 this is a lot of money when I've already spent loads just to emigrate!
any suggestions on how i can avoid this fee?
cheers
Caelan

Re: tiling in Adelaide
Hi and welcome to the forum, I don't think you can avoid it, not knowing that much about it, just from what I've read here, there are a couple of Aussie fixers on the forum, also a couple of guys that actually handle the emigration side, they should see this post and reply.
Good luck

Re: tiling in Adelaide
there is plenty of work in and around adelaide ,but you will nee a trade licence .why do you need aqf if you already have a visa? to be assessed for cert 3 here costs about $800 and takes a couple of days.check out the building tribunal at dept of consumer affairs,sa govt. i dont do to much work in adelaide anymore but the rates appear to be from $40 on big floors ,plus tax to60 plus for bathrooms

Re: tiling in Adelaide
We finally lodged in Nov but were told it may not be this year as they are concentrating on people with temp visa's already in oz so get ready for a long wait!
You're right so many of my friends have lost their jobs & although there is a recession in oz its not as bad as Uk & they are still desperate for skilled workers.
Can't wait for a change & obviously good weather

Re: tiling in Adelaide
Hi all
Im 26 and from Hartlepool and the missus is expecting but weve been planning to get over to oz (adelaide) for the past year now, been on the phone to a lady from the oz embassy and she said the best way for me to gain residency on my own back was to get a years working visa (about £180 if my memory serves me correctly) and re-qualify over there. In all honesty i couldnt remember the qualification needed but im guna give silver trowel a bell now to find out more advice.
Best of luck to anyone wanting to get over there

Re: tiling in Adelaide
Alright terry
did you learn your tiling in south shields? just a quick question as ive just done my plastering up there with north east tiling training, without sounding like to much ov a brown nose there tiling course was eye opening to say the least! i went to warrington with pts several years ago, i learnt loads more from just popping my head into there workshop. Anyway back to the question lol With my mrs having family over there we get in touch quite regular and i always ask about workload over there to which i always get back "yes craig, but its not on your doorstep" Basically means plenty ov graft but its not like working over here and travelling 5mins to a job, more like me travelling 30mins to wherever. Hope that makes sense
So when you planning on going? Have you been before? I cant bloody wait!!!

Re: tiling in Adelaide
ha ha !! yea there is work hear. i work in newcastle working for a company fixing up all the old council houses! its boring sometimes but its permanent money in the bank each week + i only work mon to fri 8 till 4 ! and theres lots of weekend work if i want it ! but iam alwase to hungover !!
ive never been to oz, but was thinking of going to nsw area (sidney etc) or the gold coast ! but to be honest would go anywhere in oz if theres work there ! iam just at the stage of gathering up my past 4 years tiling history and references from ex employers etc,to give to the guy who;s doing my aqf trade test , after he has got all the info from me he then comes to my work /home to ask a few questions on tiling etc!! then fingers crossed after he has seen my work , passes me and i get my aqf3!! then i just need to apply for visa ! start to finish it will take just over a year to get to oz (witch sounds a long way away but time flyes when your tiling !!ha ha )

Re: tiling in Adelaide
hey Alex,
hows it garn?
Thought id pick up on this one, are SA gov requirements different from Federal as this
Wall and Floor Tiler 4416-11 - Australian Skills Recognition Information
seems to indicate that tiling is not a required licence trade in SA ? If it is can my mate who is a qualified plumber 'umbrella me' with his licence?
I only ask as missus is from Adelaide (I was living there 97-03) and eventually plan to go back with her in the next year or so.....
My stomping ground was Glenelg/Daw Park . Spoke to a couple of friends last night in Adelaide, coincidentaly, they are trying to get a bath refurb done but can't find a tiler for love nor money! I offered to come out and do it for free if they send me an air ticket

Re: tiling in Adelaide
anyone herd anything about getting in to oz ? ive herd no more tilers are needed in oz and the only way to get in now is to be sponsered ? so all those who have applied on a visa will not get in ? is this right ? hope its not! apparently its due to the credit crunch! got a mate in perth and he said the ozzy tilers hate the english at the min for nicking there jobs!! just like us and the pollish !! lol.
