Trainees are employed by qualified wall and floor tilers and train on-site with their employer and offsite with a Registered Training Organisation e.g. NMIT.
Trainees work on full size projects of varying degrees at NMIT's specially designed facilities. Training identifies and underpins the underlying requirements to collect, analyse and organise information; communicate ideas and information, plan and organise activities, work with others and in teams, use mathematical ideas and techniques, solve problems and use technology required within the industry.

This course is for people working in the wall and floor tiling trade. Youwill learn how to lay tiles on a variety of internal and externalsurfaces, including horizontal, vertical, curved, sloping and twisted. Youwill also learn about waterproofing wet areas, tile types, tileaccessories, tile glues, tiling patterns and cement mortars.Career Opportunities This course qualifies you to work in the wall and floor tiling industry andsatisfies the educational requirement of the Office of Fair Trading for theissue of a wall and floor tiling trade contractors licence.Entry Requirements There are no formal educational entry requirements for this course.WorkCover regulations require that Learners must have completed an approvedprogram in OHS General Construction Induction before carrying out constructionwork.

Brief description of course and work roles

The Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling develops the skills needed to work as a qualified tiler.
Wall and floor tilers generally fix wall and floor tiles, carry out mosaic and decorative tiling and tile curved surfaces.
Tilers lay ceramic, clay, slate, marble, glass and other types of tiles on external and internal walls and floors to create protective and decorative finishes. Much of the work takes place on new buildings, including houses, shops, commercial offices, factories and swimming pools, but wall and floor tilers also carry out renovations on existing buildings.
Entrance requirements

This course is specifically designed for those who have current industry experience or have graduated locally in a related discipline.
Selection will be based on industry experience, relevant previous education and an interview with APTC staff. Short-listed applicants will need to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment as part of the selection procedure as well as a Skills Assessment Program, which will help APTC staff determine your level within the Australian qualification system.
Duration

895 hours (maximum)
This course should take around 2 years part-time.
Actual time spent will depend on your individual circumstances. Some people will be exempted certain units if they have relevant work experience or qualifications. This system is known as Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). If you think you may qualify for RCC/RPL, please submit evidence of your prior experience or learning with your application, as it may well shorten the length of your course. Ask for more information when you enrol.

Wall and floor tiling

For licensing purposes in the above work category, a tile is a thin plate of regular or irregular shape made from fired clay, moulded concrete, ceramics or natural material or other similar manufactured material.
Wall and floor tiling is the affixing of tiles for functional or decorative use on internal or external surfaces of buildings.
Wall and floor tiling works and materials can also include, but may not necessarily be limited to:

• tiles made from cork, linoleum, rubber or thermoplastics
• waterproofing of wet areas in preparation for the laying of tiles
• mosaics
• preparation and minor repair (but not renewal or replacement) and insertion of expansion joints to surfaces prior to tiling.

Qualifications

Completion of:

• BCG31303 Certificate III in Wall & Floor Tiling.

Or, completion of any of the following superseded qualifications:

• BCG30198 Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling, TAFE course #8061
• Qualification 11768 Certificate III in Tiling, Wall and Floor, TAFE course #2157
• Certificate III in Tiling, Wall and Floor, Trade TAFE course #5123.

Or, if you have previously held a licence and you apply for a new licence within three years of the former licence's expiry, your previous licence will be accepted in lieu of the current qualification requirements.

I'd just like to point out that these courses that Dan has so expertly and accurately provided to the forum are 2 of the toughest courses available and quite daunting in there content and criteria and to complete them in 2 years part time would mean at least 4 nights per week of a 3 hour duration to come close to completing the above mentioned subject matter.

I personally have dropped out of these courses twice before making my final assault in finishing all of the subjects not because I was a slack arse but because they are so intensive and time demanding.

Thought I'd just point that out. What you read seems easy enough but in reality this is far from the truth. You really need to give yourself a couple of goes over a 5 year period to master all of the subject matter. This is by no means suggesting it can't be done it most certainly can and I know people who have, but I can count them on 1 hand, and they almost burnt themselves out trying.

So just a prior warning to let people know what they are signing up for.

Another thing I failed to mention is that I completed this course after having finished my apprenticeship and with another 5 years as a tradesman on the job. As well as doing all my apprenticeship block training which is separate from the above course.

You could simply do the above course and be qualified, but with no prior experience you would find it very tough going indeed.

As luck would have it though there are ways around the problem. All that one has to do is gain employment with a larger tile firm on wages or an agreed contract or salary. Then do your 2 years experience within that firm to gain knowledge of how things are done down here.

Then once your 2 years is up you can apply to have your skills tested by an independent accessor pay your fees and they will come out to your job site for a few days and gauge whether you are competent in the skills as a tiler, give you the big tick and your papers, these papers will give you priority access to other further education courses, which in turn will lead down the associate, diploma, and degree courses involving all things related to the building industry.

what kind of things do these independant assessors check you on???

reason i ask is, apparently, as of 1/8/08, the new avenue for an 'experienced only brit' to prove his worth is to actually fly to aus and be assessed by one of these guys. the fee is going to be anything from £500-£1000 plus your flights and accomodation so it aint gonna be cheap...it would be nice to see how indepth your assessors are because my fear is alot of guys from the uk who have completed nvq's/1-2 years exp are going to get a shock..
