i worked at a job recently and the guy next door owned a large distributors in glasgow .His son is a tile fixer in oz and he told me he is doing great and they are screaming out for good tradesmen.Fresh start mate .You started before now you know how and what to do to start again-best of luck - go for the tradesmen route and you cant go wrong |

Remember, if you want to start out yourself there, you can't. You have to work one year for an Auzzie company, then you can go solo, as long as you take on two nationals.
My mate is out there at the moment, and loves it. Not as good a wage as the UK, but a better way of life, food is cheap, property he brought outright on the home he & his wife had in the out-skirts of London. He's happy just working for a company , who have been very good to him.
You'll have no probs.

Hi Gareth, just stumbled across your post, im a geordie tiler living in sydney now been here 4 years, there is tons of work here. The aussies do things abit different here, 1st of all you will need to be able to screed floors with sand & cement as all the bathroom, toilet floors have floor wastes in so you can hose out or if there is a flood. Also buy law every bathroom has to be waterproofed and tanked out, which by the way is a canny earner alone. Also there is alot more tiling outside here so all the outside areas need to be screeded aswell ( sand cement) so that the water can run away, bcause when it rains here its like a tropical downpour, and the last thing the customer wants is puddles sitting on there tile.
If you want to go self employed you will need to get a tiling licence from the department of fair trading. At the moment my rates are 60bucks m2, 80m2 porcelin, 500 slashback, 30 m2 for screeding floors, 500 waterproof bathroom, and generally about 500 aday for my day rate. Hope this has been some help for you, if need to any thing else dont hesitate to ask. cheers mate.

Many thanks for your reply, you have anwsered alot of my questions, i will get myself in a floor screed course, they do it where i learnt how to tile, i also plaster and decorate, not sure what the trade is like over there for that,
do they tank out thier bathrooms like they do in the uk? if not how mate.
Again thanks so much for the reply, looking forward to get over there, maybe have a beer mate.

Good luck to all of you, you have got to give it at least three years, if you get home sick don't come home until that three year period passes, it will unsettle you even more, trust me I emmigrated to New Zealand in 1987. One thing is for sure your going to a much better place, where pound for pound your money will go a lot further all the very best
