honestly i think courses are well worth it. i know for a fact yours is excellent. how can anybody teach you to tile correctly and more inmportantly indepthly in 4-5 days...seriously come on. i know tiling isnt rocket science but 4 weeks or 6 weeks of hands on practical tuition is much more beneficial than 5 days, would everybody with an ounce of common sence agree with that..

i reckon a weeks course is fine if it cuts to the chase. too many of these 4-6 week courses are stretched out for a number of reasons but i dont think for 1 minute they actually care about you. they say they like to teach but if that was the case then they would teach at college like most people who love to teach do...
its all about money and maybe a 5 day course is the way to go. you wont learn the whiole trade obviously but then again you wont over 6 weeks so maybe its better to do a week to learn setting out, cutting shapes and grouting then go away an expand that knowledge over time and when you need a specific question answering then we can come on here. i reckon it would take 2 years to become proficient at tiling if you include 6 months to begin, 6 months domestic, 6 months on a site and 6 months doing swimming pools , restoration, wet rooms etc
just my opinion but why waste £2-3K on a course an skim across all aspects when that money could pay for tools, advertising, 1 week course, t-shirts, cards and a few bob in the hand of a tiler for the odd mornings lecture.
dan should be knighted for making this form, arise sir daniel......

Ok I've been keeping a eye on this thread and to me it is getting a bit heated between a couple of you guys, so to set the record straight.

All tilers do an apprenticeship down here and the duration is 4 years of practical (with an employer) and further education (at a T.A.F.E college) TAFE stands for Technical And Further Education. here you will have to attend 7 week blocks each year split into 1 /3 week and 1/ 4 week modual. Here you will be assed in practical assignments which will include tiling, plastering, brick and blocklaying as well as mosaic design pattern making screeding and concrete technology to name some but certainly not all. You will have to do a set practical job ie. rendering a 10m2 wall and 4 sided column in a set amount of time then you are marked on the accuracy of the job once finished and this is guaged on Australian standards. You have to do about 2 prac jobs per week so a 3 week block will involve 6 practical assesments and a 4 week block 8. You must pass all of them otherwise you have to do it again until you do.

Then there is the theroy and I won't get into details but there is alot to learn and there will be no time for messing about. College is 8 hours a day 5 days a week at full pace. So it aint no bludge I can tell you, and after it all you a thankfull to get back to the jobsite.

So after all that and you do become a qualified tradesperson you still have to work as an employee or sub-contractor to a company or large Tiling contractor for another 2 full years, not 2 work years 2 full years that means 730 work days and have written proof of this so then you can submitt this to the licenseing authority to obtain a license to work directly to the public.

So If you have no experience and no qualifications forget about moving to Oz as a tiler because you simply won't get work when a first year apprentice will run rings around you. Stay at home get the experience then apply as a skilled migrant.

Cheers Mick

we dont all do apprenticeships but to get started with out one is not easy,in NSW my 22 years in the trade ,2 trillion references and a business degree is not good enough to get a contractors licence,i have to now be accessed for the tafe qual that Mick mentioned. idont need any of this in vic because there is no licence scheme to worry about.
