Hi ferdon welcome to the forums. The plasterboard isn't your problem, it's the ply you should be worried about. If your client won't allow you to tank the ply, you can be sure as shootin' that his expensive porcelain tiles will fall off at sometime or other.

Put drywall screws into the platerboard as well, that will suffice.

You will need to prime the plasterboard anyway if you use cement adhesive but really you will need to do something with the ply in the shower!
