Default Training Course to making a Living?

    Hi everyone,

This is my 1st post although I have been reading through the site for a while - great site.

I have read with interest peoples opinions on various tiling training courses from various providers and how sucessful they have been etc.

As most of these courses imply you could become self-employed or they include advice on subject such as quoting etc they are clearly suggesting you can go on and work alone, if you are any good that is.

Obviously this is a massive selling point that they use to push the sale of their courses. From what I've read to date there are a few members on here who have attended a course so now to my question...

Has anybody been able to actually make one of these courses pay for itself?

    Cheers,

    Craig

The training centres state that you could make a living but wether you do is up to you. There's a lot of hard work and effort in making a business a success.I only tile part time due to working full time but i've made more than enough to cover my course costs and all my tools plus i've done my own house so saved 100's there also. You have to stick with it and push on when it get's hard going.

Some of them you can do and just do your own bathroom and it would have paid for itself as you'd have not needed to get a tiler in, and you might have got discounts on your gear or whatever as a result of being at the training centre.

Though times are tough and you need to have a good business head on your shoulders and a bit of luck on your side to be sure you'll be getting regular work right now.

Lots of established tilers are finding it tough, and even more so the newer ones. Though don't let it put you off if it's what you really want to do.

Just don't jump into anything thinking it'll make you rich, because it won't.
Thanks diamondtiling, GirlRacerRed thanked for this post

    Craigg
Tread carefully when choosing a training centre. Some promise to do this and that but are really only diy courses.
Do your research first and get the correct course for you. I travelled to the North East and did the full course at N.E.T.T. There you learn things about the business side aswell as the tiling side of going alone.
I did a course locally about 18 mouths ago and just about learned how to stick a tile to the wall, complete waste of money.
    Good luck mate.

    Thanks for the replies lads.

All sound advice. I wouldn't imagine it would be anything else that extremely difficult in the current climate to start a new business.

I wouldn't jump in, but would like to look at changing careers gradually, starting with the training course and then pick up some small tiling jobs at nights weekends etc.

Glad you made it pay for itself Rad.

I'm basically just looking for some feedback from people who have been on the courses and what they have achieved from it afterwards... wether you have been able to go on and do some paid work etc. I'm not looking for figures etc just if you have been able to make progress after the training course.

Another question, do tilers take on mates like plumbers do?

I completed a two week tiling course last November and recovered my money on my first three tiling jobs. I do not tile as a living but offer it as service along with general maintenance.

I also completed a two week plastering course in January and this has also paid for itself in the last week plastering a property I purchased for renovation a few months ago. So far I have plastered four rooms which has already covered the cost of the course with another four to go. Don't mind plastering the walls but dislike doing the ceilings!
