The tray (grid) is there to help agitate the sponge to remove more grout particles, also if you dont fill it too far above the grid you can do your washing off with dry hands as only the sponge bit gets wet not the handle.

Mine is a Karl Dahm and it has got 4 wheels, you can lock them so that it doesn't move about. Not had much problem cleaning it yet, I empty out most of the water, let the sediment dry and then just scrape it out, giving a final clean with a sponge.
