Some would just tile straight on the hardboard. If I remember rightly there is a certain type of hardboard in new houses that it "OK" to tile straight onto. I think it has a green colour to it.

Personally I would still ply it out as Steve said. Better to be safe than sorry!

PS If you wait till a bit later the more experience tilers will be about an they really know there stuff!
